Frank Burdette

Co-Founder, Tillerman

Frank Burdette has spent most of his career in historic preservation and green building consulting. In 2017, he knew it was time to take the next step by starting his own consulting firm, Tillerman, LLC, with his business partner.

Tillerman provides consulting services to property owners in the form of real estate development strategies revolving around environmental sustainability. Developers who turn to Tillerman are “mission driven,” said Burdette. They are not building in a sustainable way to meet certain criteria, but rather because sustainability is their mission.

Burdette’s passion for sustainable living also is reflected in his real estate development business. Tillerman develops walkable neighborhoods and communities centered around community agriculture.

To stay on top of his heavy workload and family responsibilities, Burdette sets clear boundaries between work and home life. Between 8:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m., he is strictly focused on work. To get the most out of his work hours, Burdette stands on a gel mat facing the window, and he uses an adjustable stand to keep his computer at eye level.

“My ergonomic desk reduces stain in my neck and body, eliminating distractions caused by physical discomfort, so I can go the distance,” said Burdette.

Once the clock strikes 5:15 p.m., Burdette is ready to spend the evening with his family. Living less than one mile from Decatur CoWorks, he can quickly walk to and from work through Decatur’s second largest greenspace, the Decatur Cemetery.

“Walking home from work gives me the opportunity to wash away the worries of the work day so I don’t bring them home with me,” said Burdette.

With a family full of artists, Burdette spends much of his time appreciating the works of his wife and children. If it happens to be Thursday evening, Burdette can be found preparing for date night with his wife, a long-standing tradition.
